It originally had the name "Green and Pissed," but Carmack renamed it Doom. Rip and tear, until it is done." DOOM (1993)ĭoom was not id Software's first FPS that honor goes to 1992's Wolfenstein 3D, whose popularity led to a similar game, one that swapped Nazis for demons and boasted a more complex engine: Doom.Īfter considering making another entry in the Command Keen platformer series, id Software co-founder John Carmack came up with the concept of fighting demons using technology, taking inspiration from the team's in-progress Dungeons and Dragons campaign and combining the styles of Evil Dead II and Aliens. In this feature, we look at each entry in the series from development to reception, starting with the seminal original and ending with Doom Eternal's expansions. While it's true that Doom was not the first FPS, it is rightly considered the granddaddy of the genre a claim few games can make. It's one of the industry's most influential and longest-running franchises-27 years and counting-spawning several games, novels, a comic book, and two movies of questionable quality. and Sonic the Hedgehog, Doom is a name that people who "know nothing about video games" recognize. This idea was later used in Doom 3's Soul Cube and Resurrection of Evil's The Artifact.Much like Super Mario Bros. The Dark Claw and Unmaker feed on human souls so killing possessed humans or hellslaves allows the weapons to feed. However, it later appeared in Doom 64.Īccording to the Doom Bible, the Unmaker was intended to be a demon-tech weapon made of demon bones. It was originally a weapon from the Doom Bible which was originally intended to be in Doom, but was subsequently removed. The Unmakyr is unlocked in the Fortress of Doom by obtaining all six Empyrean Keys. Its fire rate and spread is similar to its Doom 64 incarnation with all Demon Keys unlocked, firing three projectiles per shot with a high rate of fire. In contrast to its Doom 64 design, the weapon has a distinctly "angelic" appearance like that of the Maykrs. It is built with Maykr technology, inspired by Sentinel weaponry and refined by the the Maykrs' divine intellect. The Unmaker reappears in Doom Eternal as the Unmaykr. The weapon is especially effective against the Mother Demon on Map 28: The Absolution and the "Resurrector" on Map 39: Final Judgement once all three keys are obtained. The Unmaker can be upgraded by playing through the secret maps and acquiring the Demon Keys to upgrade it's firepower. Once fully upgraded, it is arguably considered the most powerful weapon in the series, able to rapidly fire a spread of lasers that cause high amounts of damage. The Unmaker's appearance in Doom 64 has a demonic theme, though the relation between the weapon and the demons remains a mystery.
